Case Study – St Simon’s Southsea

The problem

St Simon’s Southsea, Portsmouth, is a large church on the south coast. With a 12m high roof, heat loss was always going to be a problem. The PCC had decided that as part of a re-ordering and extensive alteration plan for the church they wanted a new heating system for the main church. A number of companies were consulted of which we were one, contacted in early 2011.

The solution & Products

After a site visit and a meeting with the minister and a large number of PCC and prominent church members, we started what proved to be a complex but interesting examination of the options available from EHS that would be acceptable to the members of the church, the DAC and English Heritage, as this is a listed building. Early schemes involving our wall mounted Solaire Range of radiant heaters, which members liked and would be effective and energy efficient, came upon aesthetic objections. After much thought and in light of our installations in similar large churches in East Anglia, it was decided that the best solution was to replace the existing lighting chandeliers with our combined heating and lighting chandeliers. This was accepted by the PCC having consulted the East Anglian churches for their comments, and after 12 months of due consideration and lots of work by both parties, the installation was completed by our Electrical Contractor, Bourne Electrical, in February 2012. Comments received by the members and visitors of the church have been very complimentary and they will welcome anyone who would like to visit St Simon’s.

St Margaret With St Nicholas Church, Kings Lynn

This very large medieval church has stood in the centre of the old town Kings Lynn from the 12th century. It is used daily and even has an internal café area for visitors. The old boiler system was inefficient and needed replacing.
